More drugs needed to deal with pain following Taxol? I guess no one is questioning the impact of these drugs, just another source of higher health cost.
Breast cancer patients getting the chemo drug may suffer long-term neuropathic discomfort, study finds
MONDAY, Nov. 30 (HealthDay News) -- The chemotherapy drug paclitaxel (Taxol) increases the risk of chronic neuropathic pain in breast cancer survivors, a new study shows.
It included 240 women who took part in clinical trials of Taxol between 1994 and 2001. Those who experienced chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy during their treatment with Taxol were three times more likely to eventually be diagnosed with chronic neuropathic pain.
The study is published in the November issue of the Journal of Pain.
The findings indicate that patients treated with Taxol should be regularly monitored for neuropathic pain after their chemotherapy ends, said the researchers from the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.
In certain cases, patients and doctors should review the risks and benefits for continuing treatment with Taxol if a patient is likely to experience worsening neuropathy, the study authors added.
They noted that the same cellular mechanism that's altered by Taxol to kill tumors can be toxic to normal tissue.

E-GADS! Danone Makes This and People Eat It...
I live in a very small, rural community that sponsors a food program each month through our local Grange. Everyone in the community gets a box of food, and our Grange Master delivered my May box today.
I was happy to get rhubarb, mangoes, pears, apples, tomatoes, lettuce, and the organic green beans.
I'll also use some of the canned goods included and then pass on to a family I know, that is in great need, what I won't use.
With the food box was a yogurt six-pack. I enjoy yoghurt and usually make my own or get plain, organic, whole milk or 2% at the health section in my favorite market.
The shock to me was that the six-pack was Dannon.
I started eating Dannon yoghurt about 1954 or thereabouts. At that time this was real yoghurt and it came in flavors like lemon, banana, coffee, prune (which I loved), vanilla, and plain.
Now it is every artificial flavor you could ever think of and it is made with non fat milk so you can't absorb the calcium.
What was so shocking to me in this product, Light & Fit, were the sweetening additives. These included - from the label - Fructose, Sucralose, Aspartame, and Acesulfame potassium (K).
I don't know how anyone could stand that level of artificially produced sweetness. And I don't know how any one in their right mind would ingest such a chemical blend that is made up of very harmful chemicals.
If you read Natural Health News regularly you are aware that we have covered the problems with these artificial sweeteners, the new recombinant stevia/erythritol blends, and fructose.
I'm adding a comment here from a keen resource for the facts on the problematic sweeteners Danone is happy for you to consume -

Yes I will pass it along. That seems to be the new thing, instead of one sweetener they blend several together, like they do now with gum. Isn't one poison enough? At least it was on the label because you remember Mr. Pape from the National Yogurt Assn has petitioned the FDA to allow aspartame in yogurt unlabeled and dairy products. I don't believe a decision has been made. Even Jerome Bressler said that was illegal, but you never put anything pass the FDA. Also, consider the interaction, Maybe they figure it would be hard to tell which one poisoned you. Sucralose is a chlorocarbon poison, and Acesulfame potassium caused cancer and leukemia in original studies. Aspartame, of course, is an addictive excitoneurotoxic carcinogenic, genetically engineered drug and adjuvant.
There was a study in Liverpool some years ago on combing additives. The Liverpool team reported that when mouse nerve cells were exposed to MSG and brilliant blue or aspartame and quinoline yellow in laboratory conditions, combined in concentrations that theoretically reflect the compound that enters the bloodstream after a typical children's snack and drink, the additives stopped the nerve cells growing and interfered with proper signalling systems.http://www.organicconsumers.org/toxic/msg010306.cfm
Unfortunately government agencies ignore the studies done so have full knowledge of what is going on, and do nothing.
All my best,
Betty

Obviously it is a candidate for the trash bin but can you imagine needing that much sweet taste?

A Second Opinion on Folate Studies
Unexpected incidence of cancer from higher dose synthetic folic acid
By Sophie

Two Norwegian studies, the Norwegian Vitamin Trial [1] and the Western Norway B Vitamin Intervention Trial [2], both designed to investigate the effects of higher dose folic acid and vitamin B12 on reducing deaths from heart disease (through lowering homocysteine levels), have shown that high dose folic acid supplementation may unexpectedly give rise to an increased incidence of cancer and all-cause mortality. The results have been analysed in a recently published article in JAMA [3].
The studies found increased risk of death from cancer (as well as other risks) among those who supplemented with 800 mcg folic acid daily. Lung cancer was the type of cancer that appeared most elevated by the supplementation (around 40% of the population group were currently smokers). Supplementation treatment was carried out for (on average) 39 months and follow-up occurred for about the same time period, although the researchers had no record whether supplementation (of these and other vitamins, minerals and other nutrients) was continued or discontinued during follow-up.
It must be said though, that the results of the JAMA analysis conflict with a number of other studies that show folic acid (synthetic, oxidised folate), and more specifically, the reduced form of folates as found in green-leaved vegetables, to be linked with decreased, rather than increased, risk of particular cancers.
Facts which weaken the drawing of further conclusions from these studies
The conclusion can only be related to the particular study group in question, and it is clear that the participants in the studies were far from healthy:
100% of patients in these clinical trials had ischemic heart disease
Nearly half of them had had a heart attack, while most of the rest had chronic angina
The average age was between 62-63 years
Over three-quarters of the patients were male
More than 80% were taking lipid-lowering drugs and beta blockers
About 40% were currently smokers
Over one-third had high blood pressure
About one-sixth were obese
More than one tenth had diabetes mellitus.
Although the study looked at very limited interactions with other vitamins, namely the addition of vitamin B12 and B6 to the folic acid, there is evidence that elevated levels of vitamin B1, B2 and B3 are also needed for proper folate cycling in the body. The Norwegian researchers did not look at red cell folate status, nor at the amount of unmetabolised folic acid in the serum (the liquid part of blood). These facts weaken the drawing of further conclusions from the studies.
There is however a growing amount of scientific research [4] showing that high serum levels of the unmetabolised, oxidised form of folate, folic acid, may be associated with increased incidence of certain cancers in particular population groups. To be used by the body, folic acid must be reduced by the enzyme dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR) and, the amount of this varies among individuals by nearly five-fold.
How might a high intake of synthetic folic acid give rise to cancer?
Firstly, folate is known for the part it plays during healthy cell division within the body, whilst cancer is a form of cell division gone awry.
There is some evidence [4] that folic acid might accelerate the growth of very early, and as yet undetected cancer forms (neoplasms). There is also some evidence that high levels of unmetabolised folic acid within the serum may affect the function of natural killer cells. These are part of the body’s immune system, which among other things, kill cancer cells (Troen et al 2006 [5]).
On this particular issue, there is no evidence whatsoever that these high levels are achieved by those consuming 200 mcg or 400 mcg/day, which represent more common daily intakes in food supplements or fortified foods.
Problems caused by low folate status
Looking at the other side of the problem, there is a considerable amount of evidence to show that low folate status gives rise to a wide range of health problems, which include: increased risk of neural tube defects, increased cancer and heart disease risk, venous thromboembolism, despression, various neuropsychiatric conditions, etc.
International requirements for folate and folic acid have been set by the UN’s Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO [6]).
For further information, please see our earlier news item: ‘Another question mark over mandatory food fortification with synthetic folic acid [7]’
What the consumer should do
It seems that there are now sufficient data to suggest that high risk population groups (those over 50, who might smoke or be at risk from other known carcinogens, or have a family history of cancer) should be cautious of taking more than 400 mcg of synthetic folic acid (usually designate as ‘folic acid’ or “pteroylmonoglutamic acid’ on the label, sometimes under the category ‘folate’) daily.
Taking 800 mcg or even more of the reduced forms of folate, as found in green vegetables or in some supplements (designated as ‘methyl tetrahydrofolate’, 5-methyltetrahydrofolate’, ‘calcium-L-methylfolate’, ‘formyl tetrahydrofolate’, folinic acid or similar) does not present this risk. These polyglutamate forms do not accumulate in their unmetabolised forms in the bloodstream and are the biologically active forms.
As ever, the unfolding story of the science about folates seems to reinforce the fact that there are profound differences in the way the body responds to synthetic vis-a-vie natural forms. Naturally derived nutrients are often handled most appropriately by the body and are not always absorbed the fastest (it is a common misconception that natural forms are more bioavailable and absorbed by the body faster).
Natural sources of polyglutamate folate:
Dark green leafy vegetables, such as spinach, kale, collard greens, mustard greens, turnip greens and broccoli
Legumes, such as French beans, dried beans and peas (black-eyed peas and black, pinto, kidney and navy beans) and peanuts
Asparagus, Oranges and orange juice, Avocadoes, Strawberries

The Gall Bladder Misunderstood

Just the other day we heard news of Reality TV's mother of 18, pregnant with 19, and her dealing with premature labor.
Certainly there has been a lot of buzz about this issue, especially references to birth control. Oral contraceptives or estrogen replacement therapy can increase the risk of gallstones.
A common health issue that can be a problem for women, especially after child birth, and more frequently as women close in on the menopausal years. Oral contraceptives or estrogen replacement therapy can increase the risk of gallstones.
What is commonly ignored in mainstream medicine is that childbirth increases your risk for gall stones, and later for elevated cholesterol along with fat digestion difficulties, and the relationship of these issues to thyroid imbalance.
What we wish is for those in regular every day health care to look for cause rather than booking a cholecystectomy.
Current thinking is that it is better to keep your gall bladder, appendix, and tonsils. They aren't your vestigial organs anymore.

Certainly there has been a lot of buzz about this issue, especially references to birth control. Oral contraceptives or estrogen replacement therapy can increase the risk of gallstones.
People magazine has reported that Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar of Arkansas have welcomed Duggar Baby #19 to the family. Josie Brooklyn, weighted 1 lb. 6 oz when she was born at 6:27 p.m. Thursday at University of Arkansas, People reported.
The reality TV show couple star in the TLC reality show "18 Kids & Counting."
TMZ reported the girl was born after her mother -- who was recently treated for gallstones -- underwent an emergency C-Section. Both mother and baby are reporting stable.
While many may criticize the conservative Baptist couple for their public stance against birth control, the Duggar's believe the children are blessings from God. They recently discussed this and other beliefs with Religion News Service.
In the interview, which ranges from Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar's regular "date nights," to strangers' reactions to the large family, Michelle is quotes as saying "Every family has to do what they feel they’re called to do. We’re not out there telling people this is the way everybody else needs to live, because by all means, this is not for everyone. God wouldn’t give everybody 19 children. We realize that there’s a different calling for different people. We’re not about to judge anybody and tell them what they ought to do. That same kindness can be extended both directions."What NHN would like to highlight is Michelle's gall stones.

Foods That Help To Naturally Remove Gall Stones And Sediment - Take these daily for months, this gradual method should remove even the biggest gall stones.
Start at about 2 level household teaspoons daily of Black Seed Oil move up to one and a half dessert spoons over a period of a few weeks, and maintain for one to two months, thereafter maintain at 2 teaspoons a day for general health and efficiency of the liver. This may be the most effective remedy of the gradual method, may cause very loose bowels for a period of a few days, this is part of the cleansing process. However some persons may be over-stimulated by doses above one teaspoon, but adaptation can occur so experiment to find the best dose for yourself.
Hemp or Olive Oil - Try about two desssert spoons daily
Lecethin granules - Two dessert spoons daily (provides phosphorus)
Turmeric - About half teaspoon daily of the powder
Raw Beetroot juice, radish - 6 a day
Lemon - 1 a day
Lime, apples, pears, grapefruit - 1 a day
Chamomile and cleavers tea
Vitamin C helps break down gall stones, bladder and kidney stones.
Simple Gall Bladder Flush One Day Method - Eat only organic or spray free apples on the day of the flush (or raw apple juice up to one pint) green apples are the most effective, but any type will help. No other food.Other methods with herbs and homeopathy also have proven to be quite helpful for gall bladder problems. The natural menthods may be an option to surgery.
At bed time warm two thirds of a cup of virgin olive oil to body heat and mix with one third a cup of fresh raw lemon juice. Slowly sip the entire mixture, and then go straight to bed lying on your right side, with the right leg drawn up. In the morning stones will be passed in the stool.
This procedure may need to be repeated several times for complete clearance of the gall bladder and the liver.
Current thinking is that it is better to keep your gall bladder, appendix, and tonsils. They aren't your vestigial organs anymore.

Sick Care
"Ours is a sick-care system, and until we understand and value the role of nutrition and specific nutrients in preventing disease processes (not to mention the role of environmental toxins and the impact of endocrine disruptors on nuclear receptors), it won't be fixed. We can argue, blame, name-call, damn the insurance companies, or whatever, but the bottom line is that chronic diseases will continue to grow exponentially as they have over the last 30 to 40 years. Vitamin D3 deficiency, for example, appears to be related to the pathology of at least 17 different cancers. It converts to the most potent steroid hormone in the human body and nobody does anything with this information. Accumulation of toxins and chemicals are directly related to obesity/diabetes, according to extensive research. Why don't we know this?? It's simple...true disease prevention is not profitable. This is the crux of the problem."
A comment from a medical list I receive.
Diabetes and Pollution
A recent study published in Diabetes Care found a strong relationship between Type II diabetes and six pollutants:
• a PCB: hexachlorobiphenyl
• 2 dioxins: heptadioxin and OCDdioxin
• 2 pesticides: oxychlordane and trans-nonachlor, and
• a pesticide metabolite: DDE, a metabolite of DDT*
The contaminants were detectable in more than 80 percent of the study participants. The study found that participants who were in the highest-exposure category were almost 38 times more likely to have diabetes than those in the lowest-exposure category.
An obvious way to reduce the amount of pollutants ingested (some estimates have the average American taking in nearly a gallon of the chemicals each year) is to eat organically grown foods* instead of those grown conventionally with pesticides and herbicides.
*DDT is to be noted because sucralose (Splenda) is a chlorinated hydrocarbon, with some similarities to DDT in chemical structure.
* To reduce contaminants in conventional foods, order “FOOD SAFETY: CLEANSING OPTIONS”.

Eating Fast Adds to Overweight
Eating Fast Is Associated With Being Overweight
By Stathis Constantin PhD
It seems obvious that what we eat is associated with how much we weigh, but scientific research is now suggesting that how we eat may also play a role in determining our likelihood of being overweight. Specifically, eating quickly is now known to have an association with being overweight. Three interesting research studies conducted in recent years have looked at different aspects of this association, and taken together provide a comprehensive look at the effects of eating rate on weight.
The earliest of the three studies, published in the 2002 edition of the British Medical Journal, demonstrated that two behaviors—eating quickly and eating until full—have a significant association with being overweight. The study, conducted by Maruyama et al. of Japan, surveyed 4140 adults and analyzed the self-reported data they provided. The researchers found that the participants who were fast eaters also had the highest values for weight, body mass index, and total energy intake. The results showed that eating quickly increased the participants' odds of being overweight, and suggested that the combination of fast eating and eating until full may have a significant effect on weight.
